Q&A with thatboykwame

Born in Auckland New Zealand, raised in Sydney Australia to Ghanaian parents, thatboykwame is a creative artist who captivates fans with his meaningful interactions in the world of the arts. He skilfully explores various mediums to expand on diverse perspectives and future visions. He just dropped “nothintwosay” and we caught up with him to talk about this new release.

– Did you always know you wanted to pursue a music career?
I have always had an inkling since high school! I purposely avoided going to Uni knowing that I would make music my career.

– Your upbringing spans across multiple cultures and continents. How has this diverse background influenced your artistic vision and sound?
I’m very grateful for my upbringing! It has influenced me in ways that have enabled me to think outside the constraints of art. I look at sound and visuals as being a creative experience for people. I’m always searching for ways to evoke my truest and honest self on all grounds in hopes that people can relate with their own experiences.

– Can you walk us through your creative process in crafting your new track “nothintwosay”?
It started off with a bass riff I played that caught me singing the top line of the hook. From there all the elements of the track came together i.e Guitar, Drums, Synth.
I always freestyle my music when I write, It allows me to not over complicate the process of writing lyrics and really focus on my delivery and emotion in the recording stage to truly encapsulate the raw and natural essence of the song.

– The theme of finding peace amidst life’s challenges is central to “nothintwosay.” How do you personally navigate through difficult times, and how does this influence your music?
Interestingly enough, art is really my way of navigating through life.

– What’s the story behind the music video? Any memorable moment while filming you can share with us?
I’ve started a creative house called ‘thissideourside’ a place of no hierarchy where everyone can be at one with themselves and more importantly with each other.
Markus is an amazing individual who contributes to the process very well! We’re just able to work in a way where we can think of an idea and execute that same day, which was how the video came about.

– Your upcoming debut album is highly anticipated. What can fans expect from this project, and how does it showcase your evolution as an artist?
It’s raw, it’s vulnerable & it’s honest. It showcases my evolution in ways I can’t even explain that it just needs to be experienced.
I believe it’s a classic, it’s one of the best albums to come out in the world from a creative based in Australia.
