After Eight have officially introduced themselves with The Reach, a debut EP that places emotional songwriting at the centre of a broad alternative rock sound. The Netherlands-based five-piece spent two years developing the five tracks before recording with Stijn Donders at Raiko Records. Their music draws from indie rock, alternative rock and folk rock while incorporating elements of experimental rock, shoegaze and post punk. It is a combination that gives the band considerable room to move, and The Reach takes advantage of that space by shifting between energetic guitar-driven sections and quieter, more vulnerable passages.
The record begins with “Dress And A Veil,” which examines the emotional fallout of imagining a future with someone and then discovering that future will never exist. The song captures both the anger and grief associated with letting go of something that was largely constructed in the imagination. From there, “Blinded” explores another difficult aspect of relationships, focusing on the comfort of a connection that feels good while acknowledging that the person involved may not be the right partner. Together, the opening tracks establish an EP interested in the grey areas of love rather than straightforward romantic narratives.
“All By Myself (So Quiet)” turns the attention toward isolation, exploring the desire for connection alongside a fear of both loneliness and intimacy. The band’s quieter instincts come to the forefront, creating space around the emotional core of the song. “Running Just To Hide” subsequently introduces a more restless perspective, examining the instinct to escape from situations that feel impossible to confront. These contrasts are central to After Eight’s approach. Their music can become loud and intense without abandoning its emotional focus, while the softer moments retain enough tension to prevent the EP from losing momentum.
The final track, “The Medicine You Take,” considers the difficult choice of putting another person’s wellbeing ahead of personal desires. It also leaves room for uncertainty, particularly around whether expressions of love are sincere and whether old patterns could eventually return. The song provides a fitting conclusion to a release built around emotional contradiction. After Eight’s own story mirrors the EP’s sense of development. What began as an informal garage performance in early 2023 developed into a full five-piece, with Sonja Wilhart, Jelle van der Sar, Joram van Noort, Sako Milikian and Tim Grootscholten shaping the band’s current sound. The Reach now marks their first major statement, presenting a group with a clear interest in emotional honesty and a willingness to explore the space between heavy alternative rock and fragile introspection.
